The Saints have gone from a guaranteed playoff lock to a bit of a guessing game after future Hall of Famer Drew Brees suffered a rib injury last week.
Brees’ long term status is still unknown, but with several fractured ribs and a punctured lung, it’s safe to say we won’t see him in action this week against the Falcons.
Saints head coach Sean Payton hasn’t announced a starter at time of publish, but it’s more than likely he leans towards Jameis Winston after steering the team to a win last week over the 49ers last week.
For the Falcons, the loss of Brees couldn’t have come at a better time.
Atlanta remains a playoff long shot at 3-6, but with back-to-back wins over the Panthers and the Broncos prior to last week’s bye, the Falcons should rest easy knowing the guy that has made life so difficult over the last decade won’t even step foot on the field.
Obviously the Saints still have plenty of talent to win this game as Payton will likely run Alvin Kamara into the ground to avoid any potential Bridgewater turnovers.
That said, the Falcons aren’t as easy to run against as they used to be, evident in the fact they’ve allowed the sixth-fewest rushing yards in the league so far.
It’s pretty difficult to get on board with the Falcons outright just based on the way they continue to blow games. But when you consider they’ve covered the spread in seven of their last eight games on the road, the +5 head start is actually pretty generous.
