It will be a nervous weekend for Fremantle fans, starting on Saturday when their side heads to Canberra to face a feisty Giants team that would like nothing more than to throw a spanner in the works.
The Dockers are still a top-four chance if they take care of business in the ACT, but they’ll be sweating on the result of Sunday’s Saints/Swans game to learn their fate.
Justin Longmuir is among the candidates for Coach of the Year this season, but the second-year man in charge will know his side has plenty left to work on after kicking 17 behinds in last week’s Derby win over West Coast.
Like Melbourne, low-scoring games have been common for the defensive-minded Dockers, which does bode well against a Giants side that has averaged the third-fewest goals in the competition.
To their credit, GWS pushed the Bulldogs all the way in last week’s slow, low-scoring thriller at Marvel, but that game perhaps said more about the Dogs than it did the Giants.
Fremantle belted the orange team by 34 points when they met back in April, but there are still concerns on the injury front with Rory Lobb exiting last week’s game early to join Matt Taberner and injured skipper Nat Fyfe on the sideline.
None of the three are guaranteed to play this week, which largely explains the two-goal head-start favouring Fremantle.
On one hand, a road trip to end the season is brutal for a club pushing for a top-four spot, but on the other, it could be just what the Dockers need to boost morale and confidence heading into the pointy end of the season.
Either way, Freo should be winning this one, but the Under still feels the safer play.
