The 2022 AFL season begins on Wednesday night when Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs do battle in a Grand Final rematch at the MCG.
Although last season’s decider saw the Demons romp to a 140-66 victory thanks to an unprecedented 45 minutes of football during which they outscored the Bulldogs 100-7, more indicative of what is to come on Wednesday could be their two home & away matchups in 2021.
Those fixtures were played in a similar fashion, albeit with differing results, seeing the Dogs claim an 85-65 victory at this venue in Round 19 and the Demons an 87-59 triumph at Marvel Stadium in Round 11.
The one constant across their three matchups was the dominance of Clayton Oliver, who averaged 34.7 disposals.
In a potentially positive sign for the Dogs, three of the last four Grand Final rematches have been won by the loser of the previous campaign’s decider.
