The bottom of the ladder is almost as intriguing as the top with one round left to play.
A win for North Melbourne and a West Coast loss could be enough for the Kangas to avoid their second-straight wooden spoon, but it won’t come easy against a Suns team looking to wrap up a pleasantly surprising year on a high note.
Last week’s 60-point loss to Geelong was a far cry from the team we witnessed earlier in the season, but the Suns have far exceeded expectations under Stuart Dew given they were at one point right in the thick of the finals mix.
Injuries and some close losses have cost the Suns down the stretch, but this is still a huge opportunity for Gold Coast to potentially finish as high as 11th if results go their way.
Like so many before them, the Suns battered North when they met back in Round 12.
Sam Day, Touk Miller, and Izak Rankine all put on a show in the 52-point win, and we could see a similar result on Saturday in what may turn out to be Miller’s final game in red and yellow.
Scoring has been a huge problem for North all year, but they too will have a point to prove as they try and lure Alastair Clarkson away from Essendon or another suitor.
The Roos really gave it to the Crows for the better part of three quarters last week, and they should have plenty of support behind them at home.
It’s worth noting that the Suns have lost four of their last five at Marvel, so with a healthy head-start on offer, North covering doesn’t seem out of the realm of possibility.
