St. George Illawarra Dragons vs New Zealand Warriors Preview

A pair of 4-6 teams who will be at a very uncomfortable crossroads if they come up empty in Round 11.

St George Illawarra’s three-game resurgence hit a roadblock in the form of a 42-6 loss in Melbourne, which was compounded by a wet and wild 20-16 golden point loss to battling Gold Coast. Fullback Tyrell Sloan made some costly late errors in difficult conditions and his recall has lasted only a week, replaced in the No.1 by Cody Ramsey.

Josh McGuire (groin) is also out, replaced by Jack Gosiewski with Michael Molo named to debut off the bench.

The Warriors’ current plight (or Nathan Brown’s, at least) is another notch or two more serious. In a diabolical month, what they dished up defensively to trail Souths 26-0 was just about their worst yet. A garbage-time fightback to lose just 32-30 should not given too much credence.

On a positive note, Reece Walsh’s desire is keeping the team afloat, a frustrated Shaun Johnson is trying his guts out and Tohu Harris got through his return from an ACL unscathed. Euan Aitken returns at Eliesa Katoa’s expense. Jesse Arthars and Chanel Harris-Tavita – who would both be handy late additions – are in the reserves.

The Dragons won a seesawing Round 1 clash on the Sunshine Coast 28-16 after the Warriors’ Johnson-led comeback lost steam, with Mikaele Ravalawa bagging a hat-trick.

The Warriors have a 2-7 record at Jubilee Oval but won their most recent clash with the Dragons at the venue, a courageous 20-14 victory in Round 6 last year in which they completed 40 of 41 sets.

Authority in the middle of the field and fixing up horrendous edge defence are the Warriors’ keys to a turnaround win. Cutting down errors and following Ben Hunt’s lead will be the Saints’ path to victory. On recent evidence, the Dragons are better equipped to make the necessary adjustments.
