THEY say good things come in threes and with that in mind TAB has introduced a new betting product – Trio.
Trio is to Trifectas as to what a Quinella is to an Exacta, with Trio allowing punters to select three or more runners in one bet and if they run first, second or third in any order the punter wins.
Trio differs from a Box Trifecta as a three runner Trio is one bet, as opposed to a three runner Box Trifecta which consists of six individual bets.
For example, when you select runners 1, 2 & 3 into a Box Trifecta, you are taking six unique combinations for your bet to win (1-2-3, 1-3-2, 2-1-3, 2-3-1, 3-1-2, 3-2-1). As a result there are six possible outcomes and your bet costs $6 ($1 per combination) for 100% of the dividend.
Alternatively, a Trio bet combines these combinations into the one outcome, so for the same bet (numbers 1, 2 & 3) a Trio will only cost $1 for a full unit.
Trio has been made possible thanks to TAB’s Merged Pool Technology which is an enhancement to the tote betting system. It allows bet types on an individual race to be merged into one pool – in this case Trio will merge with the Trifecta pool. It means punters can bet into pools with more liquidity, which means greater dividend stability and punter confidence. Furthermore, merged pool technology provides punters with more certainty of their potential returns as they can now see approximate dividends on their Trifecta and Trio bets.

Pick a minimum of three runners in a race, and if they run 1st, 2nd and 3rd in any order, you win!
ISN’T THAT A BOX TRIFECTA?
- When you select runners 1, 2 and 3 into a Box Trifecta, you are taking six unique combinations for your bet to win (1-2-3, 1-3-2, 2-1-3, 2-3-1, 3-1-2, 3-2-1), as a result there are six possible outcomes and your bet costs $6 for a full unit (100% of the dividend).
- Alternatively, a Trio combines these combinations into the one outcome, so for the exact same bet (numbers 1, 2 and 3) a TRIO will only cost $1 for a full unit. Regardless of how many runners you take, a full unit of a TRIO will always cost a sixth of a full unit of a Boxed Trifecta.
WILL TRIO AND TRIFECTA HAVE THE SAME DIVIDEND?
No, dividends will be dependent on several factors including; runners’ odds, percentage of bets on the winning combination from both bet types, pool size, etc.
HOW WILL I KNOW PRE-RACE WHETHER IT’S BETTER TO TAKE THE TRIO OR TRIFECTA?
Thanks to Merged Pool Technology (MPT) we can now offer approximate dividends pre-race on your Trifecta and Trio bets, providing you with a better indication on which bet type will give you a higher dividend at the time of placing the bet.
