The UFC heads to the UK this weekend for another stacked Fight Night card. UFC Fight Night 147 is headlined by a mouth-watering Welterweight Main Event between Darren Till and Jorge Masvidal. The Co-Main featuring another Welterweight bout between local hope Leon Edwards and the pride of Iceland Gunnar Nelson is sure to be another barn burner. Let’s preview each of the top fights for another stacked UFC card, providing our best value bets in the process.
DARREN TILL VS JORGE MASVIDAL, WELTERWEIGHT, MAIN EVENT, SUNDAY 8 AM
The young Englishman enters this main event with a very accomplished 17-1-1 professional MMA record. He fought for the title in September last year, but suffered the lone loss of his career as he was submitted by Tyron Woodley. Prior to that, Till had a duo of very impressive wins over Donald Cerrone and Stephen Thompson. Possessing elite power for the Welterweight division, 10 of Till’s career wins have been by KO.
The 34-year-old American veteran enters this one with a strong 32-13 professional MMA record. A victory over Donald Cerrone in 2017 is arguably his best since joining the UFC. He comes into this one off consecutive defeats, losing to both Demian Maia and Stephen Thompson by decision. Lacking the same power that his opponent possesses, the majority of Masvidal’s wins have come by decision.
Prediction: Till by KO/TKO $2.40
For me, Till is comfortably the better fighter in this matchup. Having spent significant time in Brazil, his Jiu Jitsu is almost as strong as his striking. A title shot beckons if he can win this and I expect a strong statement here. Whilst Masvidal is a tough opponent to knockout, a 5-round fight makes me lean to this as the best value on the board.
LEON EDWARDS VS GUNNAR NELSON, WELTERWEIGHT, CO-MAIN EVENT, SUNDAY 7:30 AM
Edwards has been in some very strong form of late, deserving of this Co-Main with his 6 straight victories. The most impressive of these was a decision win over Cerrone in Singapore in June last year. Known as a strong all-round fighter, he has 6 professional knockout victories to his name.
The veteran Welterweight makes the trip to the UK backed by a strong 17-3-1 career record. He had a very strong performance in UFC 231 in December, submitting Alex Oliveira by Rear Naked Choke in Round 2. Having only been knocked out once in his professional career, he’ll definitely fancy his chances in this one.
Prediction: Edwards to Win $1.65
In front of what is sure to be a raucous crowd, I’m backing the home favourite in this one. Edwards has been in phenomenal form of late and has a huge opportunity to rise up the rankings. In what should be a close affair, Edwards’ expert striking gives him the edge in a decision win.
VOLKAN OEZDEMIR VS DOMINICK REYES, LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT, SUNDAY 7 AM
The Swiss veteran enters this Fight Night with a strong 15-3 career record. That said, he did lose both of his fights in 2018, falling to both Daniel Cormier and Anthony Smith. Renowned for his hands of steel, 11 of Volkan’s 15 career wins have come by way of knockout.
The American young gun enters arguably the biggest fight of his career with a 10-0 record. He had an impressive win over veteran Ovince Saint Preux last time out, winning by unanimous decision at UFC 229. Possessing elite striking and Jiu Jitzu ability, 80% of Reyes’ wins have been by finishes.
Prediction: Reyes to Win $1.40
I think Reyes is far too well-rounded for Oezdemir in this one. He can hang with him on the feet and it’s almost all over if it goes to the ground. At $1.40, this is the great start of a UFC weekend multi-builder.
