Adelaide Strikers and Sydney Thunder wrap up their BBL|10 regular-season campaigns on Monday night just a day after playing out a thriller. The winner is through to the playoffs…the loser will potentially be vulnerable to other results.
The Strikers won Sunday’s crunch game by six runs. Deposed Test star Travis Head, Phil Salt and Jake Weatherald all top-scored for Adelaide with 31 off 24 balls. Alex Carey (29) and Ryan Gibson (22) also chipped in – but their 6/159 looked a little short. Adam Milne’s 1/6 off four overs – including 20 dots – was a particularly notable performance.
None of the Thunder’s batsmen were able to go on with the job either, however. Usman Khawaja (36 off 30) top-scored before the Thunder endured a middle-order collapse. Ben Cutting (24* off 17) and Nathan McAndrew (17* off 10) – who both went for 10-plus an over in the first innings – gave them a late sniff that came up just short.
Player of the Match Peter Siddle (2/22) and Michael Neser (1/17) bowled superbly for the Strikers. It was these teams’ third straight game won by the side batting first and decided by eight runs or less.
The Strikers have won three of their last four. The Thunder have lost four of their last five. Both sides will be looking to their blockbusting openers for inspiration. The Thunder’s Alex Hales (472 runs at 36.30) leads the BBL’s run charts, while the Strikers’ Alex Carey (410 runs at 37.27) is third. Both smashed a magnificent century last week.
The Strikers are slight underdogs, but I’m backing a repeat result on the back of their Siddle-led attack.
