All signs seem to point to a third AFLW premiership for the Adelaide Crows.
The Crows finished minor premiers, earned a week off in the first weekend of the finals and got the job done over Melbourne 5-3 (33) to 1-9 (15) which ensured a home Grand Final – something that makes this competition stand out from the blokes.
However, it wouldn’t be a Grand Final without some drama involving a star player in the lead-up.
Adelaide captain Chelsea Randall will not play due to the AFL’s concussion protocols, she missed three-quarters of the game against Melbourne last week and the days of heroic comebacks after being KO’d are long gone.
While Randall is a significant out, there’s still the Queen – Erin Phillips.
If Dustin Martin is the greatest big-game player in the men’s competition, then surely Erin Phillips is the AFLW equal.
Yet again Phillips starred last week – kicking the only two goals of the first half and having won the player of the match in both of Adelaide’s AFLW premierships and no one would be surprised if she’s a three-time premiership player/three-time AFLW BOG come 3:30 pm local time on Saturday.
The Crows also have ball-magnet Ebony Marinoff who suffered a case of leather poisoning last Saturday with 35 touches of the Sherrin and has dominated in the midfield all season.
Adding both Phillips and Marinoff are a must if you are considering a Same Game Multi in the AFLW Grand Final.
Will it be a case of third-time lucky for the Brisbane Lions?
Coming off a thrilling last-gasp three-point win over Collingwood in the Preliminary Final at the Gabba, the Lions will take all the momentum as they head to Adelaide Oval where their destiny awaits.
The thrilling prelim victory into a Grand Final can either be a case of you played your Grand Final the week before or a stepping stone to greatness.
Brisbane has had an impeccable season, with their fair share of challenges both on and off the field, but it was their gutsy effort in an arm-wrestle of a match against the Pies that proved they are truly one of of the great teams and worthy Grand Finalists.
These two sides did meet back in Round 4 of this season when it was a masterclass from Erin Phillips with 21 disposals and four goals, including the sealer that ended Brisbane’s unbeaten run ensuring a 12 point victory to the Crows at the Lions AFLW home ground, Hickey Park.
It goes without saying that the great teams and the great players are the ones who shine best on Grand Final Day.
History will show that both Adelaide and Brisbane as the great teams of the foundation years of the AFLW competition.
However, Adelaide will be simply too good for the Lions.
Playing at home, grand final winning experience and having Queen Erin Phillips in the team is a lethal trifecta for Premiership glory.
It’ll be truly heartbreaking for the Lions to be three times the bridesmaid but you simply cannot go past the Crows in this one.
