Tomorrow night’s AFL grand final is expected to be a tight affair but Geelong has tightened from an opening price of $2.10 to $2 to defeat Richmond ($1.87), which echoes a similar firm that occurred in 2011.
When the Cats won their last premiership, they opened $2 outsiders to beat Collingwood before a groundswell of support resulted in Geelong starting $1.80 favourites in their eventual 38-point triumph.
Since the grand finalists were confirmed last Saturday night, 60 percent of interest from TAB customers has been for Geelong to thwart Richmond’s chances of back-to-back premierships.
“If the money for the Cats follows the trend of nine years ago, there is a distinct possibility that Richmond and Geelong could be equal favourites for the 2020 AFL grand final before the opening bounce,” TAB’s Trent Langskaill said.
Dustin Martin ($5 favourite) has received the most support (19 percent) from TAB punters to win his third Norm Smith Medal ahead of Patrick Dangerfield ($6; 15 percent) and Gary Ablett ($21; nine percent).
Tom Hawkins ($9) and Tom Lynch ($10) have received similar amount of interest to kick the first goal of tomorrow night’s premiership decider.
