Justin Langer will be hoping for more of the same from his top order as David Warner and Joe Burns placed Australia in a dominant position last week with their 251-run partnership in the first innings.
As a result, it looks as though the selectors have very little work to do ahead of Friday, and perhaps in the future, with Australia’s top order finally showing some stability.
The bowling attack also relished the notoriously quick wicket at the Gabba as Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins tore through the Pakistani lineup on day one. Bowling in Brisbane has long played to Australia’s advantage, but Pakistan might find some confidence in a much kinder (and slower) Adelaide Oval wicket that should favour their spinners.
Pakistan’s bowling was by far their biggest letdown as Imran Khan took only one wicket in the first innings. Yasir Shar’s brilliant Yorker to bowl out Steve Smith was the only real highlight to come from the First Test, but again, Pakistan should fancy themselves a chance if Mohammad Abbas makes his return to the side.
It’s painfully clear that Australia’s bowling is a class above Pakistan’s right now, but there is every chance we see this Test last the full five days if the visitors find themselves on the right side of lady luck.
Whether it be the no-ball on Warner’s initial dismissal or several missed chances in the field, Pakistan was their own worst enemy in Brisbane. Australia dominating in at the Gabba was almost a certainty, but they might have to work this time around.
