The scene is set for a classic derby at Suncorp Stadium after Brisbane and North Queensland both snared one-point victories in Round 1.
The Cowboys have asserted themselves as the kings of Queensland by winning four of their last five against the Broncos – including big victories in Brisbane (38-12) and Townsville (40-26) in 2022. But the Broncos made a huge statement with a 13-12 win at Penrith last Friday night.
A brave defensive display underpinned their upset of the premiers as 13.5-point underdogs – an encouraging early sign for a team that leaked 23 points per game in 2022.
Meanwhile, Ezra Mamm and Herbie Farnworth outshone big-name Panthers opposites.
The Cowboys’ 19-18 eclipse of the Raiders is harder to assess, they were unstoppable in racing to an 18-0 lead with Reece Robson, Scott Drinkwater and co. on fire.
But the Raiders rallied and the Cowboys went into survival mode, before Chad Townsend coolly got them home with a late field goal.
Reece Walsh makes his Broncos debut and will be under immense scrutiny as Selwyn Cobbo reverts to the wing with Jesse Arthars dropping out and the Cowboys take the same 17 into Round 2.
On the strength of last week’s display, the Broncos are $1.78 favourites – but this has cliff-hanger written all over it.
Expect finals-level intensity in front of a bumper crowd with field goals and golden point both a very good chance to feature.
