West Coast’s shock loss in the Derby last week to Fremantle has left them with a less than ideal path to playing finals.
Sitting ninth, the Eagles not only need to knock off the Lions at the Gabba on Saturday, but they also need either the Blues to beat the Giants or the Pies to beat the Bombers to finish eighth.
Stranger things have happened, but given the Eagles’ ongoing road woes this season, an upset in Brisbane is very hard to imagine.
As for the Lions, Chris Fagan’s side still stands a chance at finishing fourth if Port beats the Bulldogs on Friday, night followed by a big win over the Eagles.
If not, the Lions will likely settle for fifth if the Suns somehow beat the Swans, setting up a potential blockbuster elimination final against Essendon next week.
On the betting front, it’s difficult to fade the Lions given how dominant they’ve been at the Gabba – not that West Coast fans need any reminding.
The Eagles have lost their last two games against the Lions by 30 points or more, and the writing might be on the wall for a similar result following Brisbane’s 85-point win over Collingwood last week.
Even without Eric Hipwood, the Lions’ forward line has been dominant over the last two weeks kicking a combined 46 goals against Freo and the Pies.
Given the fact West Coast ranks fifth in goals allowed, Brisbane might be the safest bet this weekend.
