Brisbane Lions vs Western Bulldogs Preview

The Dogs prevailed by a single point over the Lions in last year’s thrilling Semi-Final, setting up a long-awaited rematch this Thursday night at the Gabba.

The word “pretender” has been used to describe the Lions, largely due to last week’s disheartening loss to reigning premiers Melbourne.

Chris Fagan’s side failed to show up for Thursday’s top-four blockbuster at the ‘G, not only failing to find points, but also struggling mightily with turnovers, stoppages, and marks inside 50.

The Dogs, meanwhile, continued their late season turnaround with a convincing win over Hawthorn.

It was touch and go early, but Luke Beveridge’s men prevailed by 42 points in what was also a handy percentage booster with several sides vying for their spot in the eight.

Like always, the Lions are favoured at home, but there’s plenty to suggest this game could turn into another heart-stopper.

Lining them up, both sides boast similar numbers when it comes to goals, clearances, scoring shots and inside 50s, but where the Dogs hold the advantage is in the turnover department.

The Lions coughed the ball up frequently last week against the Dees, particularly in their back half, leading to some easy scoring shots.

Similar problems won’t fly against a Bulldogs team averaging the second-most goals in the competition, but the Lions can at least rest easy knowing they rank first in the same department.

To make matters more complicated, these two sides played out a close preseason encounter, one the Lions won by six points back in March.

That hardly counts for much, but it is worth noting that eight of the last 12 games between these two sides have gone Under the Total.

Backing against the Lions at home is tough, especially with an impressive 6-2 record on the back of a loss to their name.

The Dogs will give this a crack, but with Zac Bailey and Dayne Zorko returning, the Lions should bounce back.
