Preview:

Believe it or not, this is the first time the Brisbane Lions will actually play an AFLW game in Brisbane as they face Melbourne at Hickey Park located in the Northside suburb of Stafford.

The Lions went down to Freo last weekend in Perth by 27 points however, they remain top of the conference B ladder by percentage as no “B” teams registered a win in last weekends all cross-conference matches.

Brisbane was up by 11 points at Quarter time last weekend but allowed the Dockers to dominate for the remainder of the game, finding themselves 10 points down at half time after a scoreless second quarter.

The Lions had their chances in the third quarter to get back in the game with forward Jess Wuetschner booting two goals but Freo was too quick for them.

Freo’s defenders had the better of power forward Sabrina Frederick-Traub who was held goalless for the match.
Melbourne spoiled Collingwoods homecoming party at Victoria Park last Saturday with a 17 point win.

The Demons dominated all day with ruck Lauren Peace dominating from the middle ensuring the Dees held Collingwood to just 1.3 (9) for the day in a low-scoring affair.

Elise O’Dea, Lily Mithen and Karen Paxman dominated in the midfield for Melbourne last weekend and were able to match up with Collingwood’s intensity the goalless first quarter where the Dees had double the possessions of the Magpies.

It was O’Dea who was the clear standout with 18 touches to her name before half-time and a few shots at goal, only to slot a major just before the main break.

If we’ve learnt anything from the first two seasons and two rounds of the AFLW, it’s to never write off the Brisbane Lions.

Brisbane will welcome being able to play in the Queensland humidity on Sunday afternoon but Melbourne certainly won’t make it easy for them.
