It’s been all downhill for Cairns Taipans since edging the Kings in their season opener. The Taipans have lost all five of their subsequent matches, including a dismal 20-point loss to the Hawks and an agonising OT loss to the Bullets (after leading by 11 at three-quarter time) in Round 3.
The nomadic NZ Breakers have nothing to show for their two matches so far, losing twice to the 36ers in Adelaide. After an overtime defeat in Round 2, they went down 88-78 last week. Star import Lamar Patterson played only 14 minutes of the latter game and scored zero points.
The Breakers’ clash with the Wildcats in Perth was postponed due to the city’s COVID-19 lockdown.
Eight of the teams’ last nine encounters were won by the home side. During the 2019-20 campaign, the Breakers won an early-season encounter in Auckland 93-85, but the Taipans prevailed 108-90 and 85-79 in Cairns.
Confidence is low on both sides here, but I can see the Breakers finding the requisite improvement to bank their first W of the season.
