Precious little at stake in this one, with Canterbury aiming to hold onto 12th spot (it could slide to 14th if Newcastle and the Warriors win) while Manly is already locked into an 11th-place finish.
The Bulldogs’ post-Barrett revival has sputtered out with four straight 13-plus losses to the Cowboys (28-14), Warriors (42-18), Eels (42-6) and Sharks (16-0) with the attacking flair that produced 28 or more points in five of their previous six games has dissipated.
The Sea Eagles, though, are in a much deeper hole.
Sinking to six straight losses and beset by season-ending injuries, Manly has conceded 42 points on average in its last four outings, Des Hasler’s embattled squad barely fired a shot in losses to the Sharks (40-6) and Raiders (48-6) in the past two rounds.
Corey Waddell and Tevita Pangai Jr are back for the Bulldogs, while Luke Thompson is in the reserves after COVID kept him out last week.
The Sea Eagles have named Kaeo Weekes at fullback in his third NRL game, with Tolutau Koula moving to centre and Ben Trbojevic to the bench. Josh Aloiai drops out.
The Sea Eagles are on a seven-match winning streak against the Bulldogs, with Daly Cherry-Evans booting them to a 13-12 victory at Brookvale in Round 3 this year.
Farewelling Kieran Foran in style should provide motivation for Manly this week, but the depleted side looks like they’ve given up.
Canterbury has plenty to be optimistic and, as the more harmonious outfit, should be able to get up here.
