Preview:

Collingwood returns to its spiritual home Victoria Park to play the Demons this Saturday and while back in the day playing the Pies at Vic Park was a daunting task, it’s a little bit different in the era of AFLW.

Both the Magpies and the Dees are coming off close losses in Round One and will be desperate to win as with the short seven round AFLW season, no team can afford to lose their first two matches.

Collingwood was agonisingly short of beating the Cats last week going down by one point.

Recruited from the Magpies VFLW team, Sophie Alexander showed she meant business up forward kicking the opening goal of the game from 45 meters out and also went on to kick two behinds until an elbow from teammate Sharni Layton left her with a concussion.

Former Netballer Ash Brazil looked to be comfortable in defence for the Magpies while high profile recruit Sharni Layton will need a bit more time to get used to footy, giving away a 50-meter penalty allowing the Cats to kick their first goal.

The Magpies missed several direct shots at goal last week which ultimately cost them the game against the Cats.

Melbourne also comes off a loss going down to Freo by four points in hot conditions at home last weekend in a high-scoring entertaining affair.

The Dees midfield got most of the ball but the Dockers were able to match it with effective disposals compared to a handball-happy Demons.

The match was well fought out and the Dees were able to complete a 34 point turnaround in the third quarter, keeping Fremantle scoreless.

Melbourne’s tall-forwards of  Tegan Cunningham and Eden Zanker proved a valuable combination while midfielder Lilly Mithen, Kaaren Paxman and Elise O’Dea got plenty of the footy in what many considered to be the best game of Round One.

The Demons are desperate to play AFLW finals football this season after two close Grand Final misses and with a few tweaks to their gameplan, along with their high scoring attacking style of football they should be too good and deny the Magpies a win at its spiritual home.
