Dolphins vs Canberra Raiders Preview

The Dolphins produced an early favourite for Dally M Headline Moment of the Year by stunning the heavyweight Sydney Roosters 28-18 in a rousing Suncorp Stadium debut.

The Wayne Bennett-inspired ambush electrified the rugby league world.

Felise Kaufusi terrorised the Roosters pack, Jeremy Marshall-King and Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow were spectacular, their widely-dismissed halves pairing stood tall and a host of unheralded players – such as barnstorming tryscorer Connelly Lemuelu – put their names up in lights.

Riding that wave of emotion for an extended period is unrealistic and impractical, but the Dolphins should get another kick along from playing their first match at Redcliffe this Saturday.

They host Canberra, a team coming off an ultimately respectable 19-18 loss to North Queensland as an under-strength side fell behind 18-0 in Townsville, but rallied brilliantly on the back of a superb bench effort.

Compounding the ongoing absence of Josh Papalii and Xavier Savage, the Raiders have lost Jordan Rapana to suspension with Albert Hopoate coming onto a wing.

The Dolphins’ only change sees Mason Teague come onto the interchange to debut in the place of Ray Stone (knee).

There’s a tendency to expect the Dolphins to come back to earth and they are $2.45 underdogs here, but anything like the authoritative display the newcomers’ seasoned pack produced last week will ensure a hard-fought encounter.

A packed house at their boutique home ground (where Canberra lost in golden point to the Warriors last year) presents another hurdle for a rusty, depleted Raiders outfit.
