Preview:

The bogey of Dominic Thiem stands in the way of Novak Djokovic winning his eighth Australian Open title in Sunday night’s final.

The 26-year-old Thiem has a handy record against the mighty Djokovic, winning four of their 10 clashes. But it’s their recent encounters that will give the Austrian plenty of confidence about pulling off an upset.

Thiem has won four of the pair’s last five, including French Open match-ups in 2017 and ’19. He also prevailed in a tight ATP Finals hard-court contest in November.

The fifth seed has enjoyed an extremely impressive tournament since surviving a five-setter against young Aussie Alex Bolt in the second round. He whipped 10th seed Gael Monfils in straight sets in the fourth round, before shocking Rafael Nadal in four sets in the quarters, and coming from a set down to beat Alexander Zverev in a thrilling four-set semi.

Thiem’s ability to win his first-serve points (78% against Nadal, 77% against Zverev) has been crucial to his success in Melbourne.

Since dropping a set against Jan-Lennard Struff in the first round, Djokovic has won five consecutive matches in straight sets. The world No.2 cruised through to the quarters, where he beat in-form Milos Raonic 6-4 6-3 7-6, before overwhelming a hobbled Roger Federer 7-6 6-4 6-3.

Ominously, the defending champ is 7-0 in Australian Open finals (16-9 in grand slam finals overall). Thiem is featuring in his third grand slam final, having lost the 2018-19 French Open deciders to Rafael Nadal.

If he were to win, Thiem would become the first first-time major winner since Marin Cilic (2014 US Open). The ‘Big Three’ of Djokovic, Federer and Nadal have won the last 12 straight majors between them; Thiem’s gruelling grand slam apprenticeship may have to continue just a bit longer.

Djokovic’s reign as the King of Melbourne should continue – he is the complete player and still in his prime at 32. But Thiem can make him uncomfortable and should grab a set in an absorbing final.
