Epsom Handicap Tips, Odds and Field Preview – 2016

Randwick takes centre stage on Saturday with their three Group 1 events including the time honoured Epsom Handicap (Race 7).

Chris Waller saddles-up four horses in this race including one of the favourites, Mccreery.

His last start win over 2000m was very dominant and this horse does have a very similar profile to the 2014 Epsom winner, He’s Your Man.

This gelding is rock hard fit, drawn well in barrier 4 and has no weight on his back.

Palentino has made the trip up the highway after winning the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes in brilliant style last start at Flemington.

He has to carry the top weight but I can’t ignore this horse because he beat a very smart animal last start inBlack Heart Bart and is trained by the gun trainer, Darren Weir.

If he can sit one off the fence from barrier 9, then he should be right in the finish.

My top pick for the race is the five-year-old mare, Heavens Above. She’s on the quick back-up from last weekend where she worked home well to finish 6th in the Golden Pendent.

I expect her to peak now and with no weight on her back, she’s going to be very strong at the end of the race.

Another big chance in the race is the Chris Waller-trained Mackintosh. This smart gelding follows the same path to the races as stablemate Winx did last year following his win in the Theo Marks last start.

He’ll appreciate the rise in trip and with no weight on his back, he’s great each way value.

Hauraki has come back a much smarter horse this time in and he should be fitter now after two runs back.

He’s a talented horse but I’m happy to bet around him because he needs luck from barrier 10 and I don’t think he’s a genuine Group 1 horse.
