Expressway Stakes Tips, Odds and Field Preview – 2017

The field for the Group 2 Expressway Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill this Saturday has fallen away, but does mark the return to racing of smart sprinter  Music Magnate.

MUSIC MAGNATE

Odds ($1.90 favourite)

Jockey: Kerrin McEvoy.

Why he can: Doomben 10,000 winner resuming from a spell. Has trialled brilliantly at Randwick and Rosehill, latest 900m heat, Winx was third. Good first-up record, honest and should be fit enough to run a bold race.

Why he can’t: No reason.

KURO

Odds ($5.00)

Jockey: Josh Parr.

Why he can: Has been in the money four of five runs this preparation. Latest came from well back to score a solid win in Takeover Target Stakes (1200m) at Gosford. Fitness edge on most of these.

Why he can’t: Listed winner and steps up in grade here, but form is hard to fault.

BALL OF MUSCLE

Odds ($6.00)

Jockey: Tim Clark.

Why he can: On speed runner, fitter for two runs from a spell. Latest he led and tired under 59kgs when third to Kuro in the Takeover Target Stakes. Small field suits.

Why he can’t: Hard to catch and long time out of winner’s stall. Group 1 placed in the 2015 Moir, but his last win was QTC Cup in May 2015 and hasn’t been finding a lot at the end of his races.

BIG MONEY

Odds ($16)

Jockey: Hugh Bowman.

Why he can: Turned in a nice effort second-up, when fifth to Le Cordon Bleu in the Canterbury Classic (1200m). Took time to wind-up, but was doing his best work on the line.

Why he can’t: He tries hard every time he steps out, but struggles to win. His last win was February last year.

HANDFAST

Odds ($8.00)

Jockey: James Doyle.

Why he can: Resuming from a spell and is first-up winner. Godolphin four-year-old, Listed winner and fourth to Sons Of John in Group 3 before a break. He will be forward for this after two trials.

Why he can’t: Blinkers come off and may not be up to these at this stage.

ATTENTION

Odds ($9)

Jockey: Blake Shinn.

Why he can: Won Qld Sires’ Produce Stakes and having first start here as a three-year-old. Trialled four times since June, latest was not knocked about this track, when third to Galaxy Warrior over 900m.

Why he can’t: Tough ask against older horses and would prefer in three-year-old company.
