Geelong Cats vs Brisbane Lions Preview

There’s no love lost between the Cats and the Lions, especially after two classic encounters last season.

Brisbane fans need not be reminded of their controversial one-point loss at The Cattery in Round 2, but they can feel confident knowing their side made up for it with a comprehensive 44-point win at the Gabba later in the year.

Sitting 3-0 atop the ladder, Lions head coach Chris Fagan will be out to prove a point after his side belted North Melbourne by 108 at the Gabba last week – Brisbane’s largest win under his tenure.

The Cats, meanwhile, will be out to make a statement of their own after fighting back from the death to erase a 30-point deficit against Collingwood.

There’s plenty to be learned from this game on Friday night, and while it’s always tough playing on the road in Geelong, there is a case to be made for the Lions here.

We’ve only played three games, but Brisbane already leads the competition in points scored – a worrying sign for a Geelong team that has given up the fifth-most goals at an average clip of 13 per-game.

Brisbane’s pressure has also been outstanding through the first three rounds, led by Lachie Neale and Jarrod Berry.

Lastly, the Lions have been one of the top sides when it comes to tackling inside 50, an area Geelong struggled with last week during Collingwood’s momentum-swinging run in the third quarter.

You can’t discount Tom Hawkins toying with the Lions like he’s done so many times in the past, but after what we saw from the Cats last week, it’s a lot easier to feel confident in Brisbane.
