They’ve been the standout team from start to finish, but can the Cats finally clear their finals hurdle?
Chris Scott prepares for his 11th finals campaign on Saturday against a team Geelong has had no problem beating in recent years.
The Cats strolled to a comfortable Semi-Final win over Collingwood during the shortened 2020 season, although their last two encounters have been decided by no more than a pair of goals.
Geelong’s form speaks for itself. It’s incredibly difficult to win 13 games in a row, but nobody knows better than Cats fans that regular season form counts for nought come finals time.
Given their season and the quality of talent on paper, the Cats are the rightful favourite in the market, but there’s nothing more dangerous than a team that has relished the role of underdog throughout most of the season.
Playing with a chip on their shoulder, the Pies are red-hot heading into September following a rousing, come-from-behind, one-point win over Carlton two weeks ago.
Collingwood has made a habit of winning most of its games by single figures – nine to be exact – and there really isn’t a more exciting fourth-quarter team in the competition right now.
Looking back, the Cats were able to pick up a win over the Pies in Round 3 by making the most of their inside 50 entries.
Collingwood actually dominated in this area, but Geelong turned the tables by taking 20 marks inside 50 to the Pies’ 7.
Rebounding the ball from their back half has become a staple of Collingwood’s success this year, but they’re about to meet their match against a Geelong side that has made it almost impossible for opposing teams to go the length of the ground.
Collingwood deserves enormous respect for their fourth quarter resolves this year, and even though the Cats have become somewhat of a meme following a bye week, Geelong’s class and finals experience should see them through to another Prelim.
