Geelong Cats vs Western Bulldogs Preview

The Dogs take a trip down the highway this week for a long-awaited rematch against the new flag favourites.

Luke Beveridge’s side lost by 13 points against the Cats back in Round 12, a game they’d probably like to have back after allowing Geelong to kick seven goals in the opening term.

The Dogs have largely been all bark and no bite since then, but they still managed to keep their finals hopes alive with a stirring win over Melbourne last week at Marvel.

Jamarra Ugle-Hagan’s last-second goal could go down as the defining moment of the Bulldogs’ 2022 campaign, but there was just as much to like about some of the personnel decisions Beveridge made defensively.

Ruckman Tim English also gave Max Gawn a serious run for his money, and his recent uptick in form couldn’t have come at a better time with the Dogs facing a very tricky run home.

For all their recent positives though, beating the Cats in Geelong still looks an enormous ask.

The Cats have won 15 in a row at GMHBA, while the Doggies’ last win at the Cattery came way back in 2003.

Melbourne’s defensive issues down back and a late wave of momentum helped the Dogs over the line last week, and while you can’t take anything away from them, it’s hard to see the Cats succumbing to the same kind of errors.

Geelong’s brand of footy is in a league of its own right now, and with three of their final four games to be played at home, this is an enormous opportunity for them to make a statement and move a step closer to locking up the minor premiership.
