No surprise to find Melbourne favoured by plenty heading into Saturday’s clash at Metricon against the Suns.
In a game that turned out eerily similar to last year’s Grand Final, the Dees again proved too strong as Ben Brown and Christian Petracca overpowered the Bulldogs for a comfortable 26-point win.
The reigning premiers now set their sights on a team many had down for the wooden spoon, but based on last week’s effort over West Coast, it’s fair to say the Suns aren’t going to be the easy-beat team they have been in the past.
With Matt Rowell back in the side, the Suns stormed home late to defeat the understrength Eagles in what was a very encouraging performance from Stewart Dew’s men.
Gold Coast’s pressure in the final term proved the difference, while new recruit Mabior Chol also looked right at home kicking a couple of goals.
Of course, this is a much tougher task against the benchmark of the comp.
The Suns have lost nine straight to Melbourne since 2014, while they were also on the receiving end of a 98-point loss to the Dees last August.
There is a chance Gold Coast keeps this tight early on, but I’m not sure they have the legs, or the experience, to handle a full four-quarter assault from Melbourne.
