Gold Coast Suns have been one of the AFL’s feel-good stories of 2020, but a maiden finals berth is looking increasingly unlikely after four losses in their last five games.
The 4–5 Suns’ kicking efficiency went out the window in a 9.7 (61) to 4.11 (35) defeat to GWS Giants on Sunday. They kicked 0.3 in the first and third quarters of a forgettable outing and did not look hungry enough around the ground.
Third-placed St Kilda rolled on to a third successive win in round 9, racking up their highest score and biggest winning margin of the season in a 15.11 (101) to 6.12 (48) rout of Sydney. Nick Hind and rookie Max King both kicked three goals, while Jade Graham (23 disposals, 2 goals) continued his hot run of form.
With wins over Richmond and Port Adelaide to their name in 2020, the young and exciting Saints appears to have something special brewing as they set a course for the club’s first finals series since 2011. But with a very tough schedule ahead of them, Brett Ratten’s side will be desperate to keep the momentum going and bank four points at the Suns’ expense.
The Suns are 4–9 against the Saints since entering the AFL and have lost the last four straight. The last three encounters were decided by four points or less, but the Saints – the pick in the vast majority of experts’ AFL round 10 tips – should cover a modest start at Metricon Stadium.
