Gold Coast Titans vs St. George Illawarra Dragons Preview

Justin Holbrook hit the panic button last week but it didn’t work for the Gold Coast Titans as they dropped their fifth on the bounce while going down to the Roosters 44-16. Meanwhile, the St. George-Illawarra Dragons became the latest team to be thrashed by the Storm.

Jayden Campbell has been named to return for the Titans which pushes AJ Brimson into five-eighth and Will Smith out of the side. Phil Sami is back and onto the wing with Jamayne Isaako on the other. Esan Marsters makes a surprise return into the centres for Patrick Herbert while Kevin Proctor, expectedly, drops out. The Dragons, on the other hand, have stuck with the same 17.

The Titans are a mess and there is little to suggest they can clean their act up this week – particularly without David Fifita. Another change to the spine won’t help. While it’s the foursome they opened the NRL season with, Campbell, Brimson, Toby Sexton and Erin Clark haven’t played together since Round 3 and didn’t play well together up to that point. The Dragons aren’t a flashy team but they play to their strengths. That being: Getting into the grind, giving it to Ben Hunt, and hoping for the best. The Titans have shown time and time again over the last two seasons that they will lay down at the slightest sign of trouble. Poor periods of a match continue to plague them and it’s often enough for the opposition to pile up points and secure the win. Given the Titans average only 15.6 points per game, the Dragons (15 points per game) won’t need to pile up many if given the chance. When you’ve got two below-average teams going head-to-head without a clear favourite it often comes down to the quality and execution of the star players. Hunt is the best player taking to the field on Saturday and should be able to guide his Dragons side to another win – albeit an ugly one.
