Hobart Hurricanes vs Melbourne Renegades Preview

Hobart Hurricanes can clinch their place in the BBL playoffs with a win over the last-placed Melbourne Renegades on Tuesday night.

The 6-6 Hurricanes are fifth with two games in hand – two points clear of the Stars, who have one regular-season fixture left.

After sinking to a 9-wicket loss to the Thunder, the Hurricanes turned the tables on Thursday with a 9-run win over the Thunder in Melbourne. Skipper Matthew Wade (83* off 54) and Caleb Jewell (51 off 32) steered Hobart to 6/177. But Riley Meredith (3/29) carried off Player of the Match honours, while Jordan Thompson (3/24) and Sandeep Lamichhane (2/26) both bowled superbly in a thriller.

Renegades on track for another spoon

The 3-8-1 Renegades’ playoffs bid has petered out with three straight losses to the Thunder (29 runs), Sixers (45 runs) and Stars (6 wickets). Batting has let the Melburnians down, with Aaron Finch’s 45 off 44 their highest individual score during the losing run as the Renegades scratched their way to team totals of 80, 105 and 7/122.

The Hurricanes produced their most dominant all-round display of BBL|11 against the Renegades in late-December. Ben McDermott crushed 127 off 65 and Tim David (30* off 9) chipped in late as the ’Canes reached 5/206 at Marvel Stadium. Reece Topley (2/17) was the only Renegades bowler to avoid a touch-up. Sam Harper (57 off 35) played a lone hand in the ’Gades’ chase, which finished on 121 in the 16th over. Tom Rogers and Sandeep Lamichhane both picked up three wickets for Hobart.

The Renegades, last in BBL|10, will be eager to offload the wooden spoon. But their recent form doesn’t bode well. The $1.48 favourite Hurricanes have plenty to play for and key players in good touch with bat and ball.
