JJ Atkins Stakes Tips, Odds and Field Preview – 2016

The 2YO’s get their crack at the feature Group One of the carnival for youngsters over 1600m in a race that’s dominated by the visitors.

In an open market we’ve honed in on the two main chances who should be fighting it out in the finish. Sacred Elixir ($4.00) retains the services of Zac Purton and attacked the line with plenty of vigour last time out in the Sires Produce. The Kiwi has a scintillating turn of foot which should be far too superior for his rivals on the big track here at Eagle Farm.

Nothing went right for Goldolphin’s Souchez ($4.60) in the Sires Produce, where he was caught wide and still had the tenacity to fight on to be beaten only 1.2 lengths. With James McDonald on board, he should get a nice tow into the race and be presented at the right time.

Outside of those two they are queuing up on the third line of betting, where a couple of local horses are looking to fly the flag for Queensland in the Kelso Wood trained Nikitas and Steven O’Dea trained Candika. Nikitas ($9.50) is a half to VRC Oaks winner Jameka and will relish getting up to the 1600m. He was sound in the Sires Produce and looks a nice each way play.

Candika ($8.00), a filly by Sebring, flashed home in the Sires and is another who will appreciate the spacious Eagle Farm circuit.
