The Karrakatta Plate is about as good as it gets for the two-year-old crop in Perth and we’re set for another exciting edition of the Group 2 feature at Ascot on Saturday.
Gemma’s Son is yet to taste anything but success and understandably, he has opened and clear favourite in Karrakatta Plate betting, but this is the hardest task of his career so far and he’ll need to go to another level.
Karrakatta Plate – Winner
No. 1 Gemma’s Son – Bet Now: $1.65
It’s rare to see a horse without the famous cerise silks of Bob Peters going around a short-priced favourite in a Perth feature, but that is the case with Gemma’s Son, and I think he’ll be winning. The Snippetson colt has continued to improve with each effort and as the bar has been raised, culminating in wins in both the Magic Millions race at Pinjarra and the Listed Perth Stakes most recently. This is the next logical step, and he can keep alive his unbeaten run.
Karrakatta Plate – 2nd
No. 6 Starfield Impact – Bet Now: $10.00
Starfield Impact has recorded two wins from as many starts back from a spell and looks the major danger to Gemma’s Son in the Karrakatta Plate. The Demerit filly is one of the more experienced horses in the Karrakatta Plate field and hasn’t run a bad race in six career starts. She has so far won both the Listed Supremacy Stakes and the Group 3 Gimcrack Stakes this time, and harbours further improvement. She does look a touch of overs at Karrakatta Plate odds of $9.
Karrakatta Plate – 3rd
No. 4 Dark Assault – Bet Now: $41.00
Dark Assault finished less than two lengths from Gemma’s Son when second in the Perth Stakes last time out and when the field was confirmed on Tuesday, he was somehow a $41 shot to win this. While he’d need to improve to turn the tables on that horse, he has shown plenty of ability and is up to finishing in the minors of the Karrakatta Plate. The Statue Of Liberty colt is yet to record a race win, but he has placed twice in only five career starts.
Karrakatta Plate – 4th
No. 8 American Choice – Bet Now: $11.00
Simon Miller will saddle a couple in the Karrakatta Plate field, but there is no doubt that American Choice stands as his best chance of winning the race in 2020. American Choice stamped herself as a filly to follow when debuting in November and has also raced well back from a spell, running second and fourth behind Starfield Impact in the previously mentioned races respectively. She’s fitter third-up and can fight out the finish again.
