Melbourne Demons vs Sydney Swans Preview

The first Qualifying Final promises to be a good one with reigning premier Melbourne taking on Sydney on Friday night.

The Swans will be hoping to make up for lost time after suffering a heartbreaking one-point loss to rivals GWS in last year’s Elimination Final, and they shouldn’t be short on confidence after knocking off the Dees once already this year.

Swans fans can look back fondly on their two-goal win at the ‘G back in Round 12, a game that saw Sydney win the clearances and also apply a tremendous amount of pressure in the second half.

Melbourne bounced back from that three-match losing streak quite well, but outside of last fortnight’s dominant win over the Lions, it’s fair to say the Dees haven’t been quite as ferocious as they were last season.

Low-scoring games and some issues down back have been prevalent throughout various stages of the year, while Simon Goodwin’s men have also shown issues closing out the fourth quarter in games against the Dogs, Collingwood, and Carlton recently.

Those same issues cost Melbourne earlier in the year as Sydney outscored the Dees four goals to one in the final term.

John Longmire’s side did a fantastic job of shutting down Max Gawn in the late stages, while the win was made even more impressive by the fact Buddy Franklin was absent up forward.

The Swans have had their issues playing on the road this year, particularly in Melbourne where they’ve posted a 3-3 mark.

Even so, this team has been somewhat of a dark horse during the second half of the season, and there’s no denying they have the midfield and the forward line to match Melbourne’s.

In terms of pressure, there isn’t a better tackling side playing finals than the Swans, while they’ve also had no problem finding the scoreboard ranking fourth in points-per-game.

Backing them outright is tough, but given the underdog has covered in each of Sydney’s last 11 matches at the MCG, the Swans at the line looks a very good bet.
