Preview:

Tuesday night sees the BBL’s bottom-two teams lock horns at Marvel Stadium. The Renegades are well out of contention but have belatedly found a bit of form. The Hurricanes have the slimmest of finals hopes still, but have not won in over two weeks.

The Hurricanes powered to a seven-wicket win with five balls to spare against the Renegades in Hobart on Christmas Eve. D’Arcy Short’s 60 from 45 negated Australian teammate Aaron Finch’s 50 off 37 as the hosts chased down 148.

But it was the bowling of Nathan Ellis, Riley Meredith and James Faulkner – who all took three wickets – that set up the win.

That result was part of the Renegades 0-9 start to the season. But the defending champs have now won their last two.

Sam Harper (52 off 38) and Dan Christian (3/14) spearheaded a 12-run DLS win over the Thunder. Beau Webster top-scored with a modest 36 against the Heat on Sunday, but another five ’Gades batsmen posted 20-plus in a total of 6/164. Cameron Boyce (4/15) was the chief destroyer as the Heat crumbled spectacularly, giving Melbourne a 44-run road victory.

The 3-7-1 Hurricanes have lost three of their last four, with one no result.

David Miller’s brilliant – and overdue – 90* off 48 was not enough to prevent a 10-run home loss to the Strikers on Sunday. Ben McDermott (31 off 17) chipped in also, while Scott Boland (2/26) was the ’Canes best bowler.

Hurricanes linchpin Short and Renegades duo Finch and Kane Richardson are yet to return from ODI duty.

There’s far more riding on this for the visitors. But the Renegades have finally found some rhythm and should account for the slumping Hurricanes at home.
