Brisbane Roar are aiming consolidate their top-six position when they take on struggling Melbourne Victory on Wednesday night.
Melbourne Victory have won six and drawn one of their last eight against Brisbane. Andrew Nabbout’s first-half goal got the Victory a 1-0 result at Suncorp Stadium in Week 3 – their fourth straight against the Roar.
Unfortunately for the Victory, it was the first of just five wins they have managed in 22 games. They went down 2-1 to Western United on Saturday in their only fixture since the restart. The Victory were unable to convert some gilt-edged first-half opportunities and only got on the board in the 83rd minute via Storm Roux’s header.
The fourth-placed Roar crashed 1-0 to Adelaide United on the Gold Coast in their only post-restart assignment. The Roar created more than enough chances in their first match under caretaker Warren Moon but couldn’t convert.
Brisbane have a handy buffer between them and the teams outside the top six. But with tough games against Wellington and Sydney to come, three points from this match-up would be a huge boost for the Roar.
The Victory’s suspect defence should offer the Roar an easier path to capitalising on their goalscoring chances. Meanwhile, the Roar have not conceded more than one goal in their past 11 games, including five clean sheets.
