These two sides have taken different paths to the final, but it’s fair to say both belong on the big stage after overcoming a rocky fortnight in the leadup.
England and New Zealand met a week ago at Chester-le Street, a match this year’s hosts won comfortably by 119 runs.
After Thursday’s eight-wicket onslaught over Australia in the Semi-Final, England has been installed as the favourite at Lord’s on Sunday night.
It’s been well over 12 months since New Zealand last beat England in One Day format, but if their bowling attack can bring the same kind of energy it brought against India following the rainout, there’s nothing stopping the Black Caps from causing an upset.
Of course, the same also goes for England. Jofra Archer was enormous against Australia in the early goings disposing of Aaron Finch for a duck, while he was also responsible for Glenn Maxwell’s dismissal not long after.
England will be looking for the same kind of production they saw from their top order against the Kiwis last week. Jason Roy put up a half century while Jonny Bairstow chipped in with a ton, compared to Kane Williamson’s lackluster 28 run effort.
The openers are crucial for either side, but there’s also plenty to be said Eoin Morgan. The English captain has recorded five 50’s and a century against New Zealand, making him the x-factor for the three Lions.
We originally tipped the hosts in this year’s Preview, and despite New Zealand’s stunning come from behind victory against India, England look destined for their first ever World Cup victory.
