Parramatta Eels vs Cronulla Sharks Preview

Parramatta took Melbourne to golden point in last Thursday’s low-scorer – a stoic effort given the club’s injury and suspension list, but the pressure will mount on the 2022 runners-up if they go 0-2 after two home games.

J’Maine Hopgood was one of the standout forwards of Round 1, while fellow recruit Josh Hodgson’s first outing in Eels colours was encouraging, however they lost the yardage battle to the Storm despite enjoying a decent possession advantage.

Sean Russell returns on the wing for Isaac Lumelume in the Eels’ only change.

Cronulla is getting a bit of early-season leeway due to the injury absence of linchpin Nicho Hynes, who is out again this week.

The Sharks were plucky but mistake-riddled in a 27-18 loss to Souths, though No.7 Braydon Trindall was arguably their best.

Wade Graham’s four-game suspension is another blow for a Sharks side crying out for leadership and direction.

Connor Tracey joins the bench, while Royce Hunt is back from injury in time to replace Jack Williams (head knock).

Cronulla took out the teams’ sole 2022 clash – an 18-16 thriller in Round 2 with Hynes slotting an after-the-siren conversion of a late Teig Wilton try.

Parramatta boasts a 32-12 record at CommBank Stadium but has lost three of their last seven at home. The Sharks went down 28-4 in their only visit to the venue in 2021.

The Eels are $1.52 favourites and will get the result if the Sharks are anywhere near as ill-disciplined with the ball as they were in Round 1.

The onus is on the likes of Matt Moylan to step up for the visitors, who are blessed with more than enough forward power and attacking strike to spring an upset.
