Queensland Derby Tips, Odds and Field Preview – 2016

This year’s Queensland Derby promises to be a great contest with three horses under the $5.00 mark. Favourite at ($4.40) is the Victorian visitor, trained by the all-conquering Darren Weir,Howard Be They Name. Winner of the SA Derby in May, Howard Be Thy Name was solid behind rival Mackintosh ($4.60) in the Grand Prix Stakes last start. With the added experience of going the clockwise and the D K Weir polish, he is certain to play a part in the finish.

There may be a slight query on whether Mackintosh will run the trip but he’s been very honest all prep and won both the traditional lead ups heading into the Derby. You would be very brave to write off a Chris Waller trained horse.

The best chance in the race looks to be Eagle Way ($4.80) who is peaking at just the right time. He had a super run in the Grand Prix Stakes last start where he finished off the race powerfully. He’s been screaming out for a big track and gets that here with racing returning to Eagle Farm. He’s off to Hong Kong after this run and he should be heading overseas a Group One winner before joining John Moore in Hong Kong.

One at odds to include is Eschiele ($8.50) from the almighty Godolphin stable, ridden by local hero Damian Browne. No luck at all last start and gives every indication the 2400m of the Derby will suit.
