It certainly hasn’t attracted the hype of its Victorian counterpart in 2020, but a strong edition of the Group 1 Randwick Guineas will be run and won on Saturday.
Star three-year-old Super Seth headlines the Randwick Guineas field but there is no doubt that he’ll need to be at his best to overcome the likes of Shadow Hero, Castelvecchio and Microphone.
RANDWICK GUINEAS – WINNER
No. 2 Super Seth – Bet Now: $2.70
It’s impossible to argue with Super Seth’s obvious talent and excellent record and he’ll take a power of beating in the Randwick Guineas. The Dundeel colt has missed a place only twice in nine career starts and his performance to pip Alligator Blood on the line in the Caulfield Guineas last spring was what dreams are made of. So far this season he has made light work of his rivals in the Neds Manfred Stakes and finished a close second in open company in the Group 1 Futurity. He’ll only improve third-up and back to his own age group.
RANDWICK GUINEAS – 2ND
No. 1 Castelvecchio – Bet Now: $7.50
Castelvecchio is a Group 1 winner at this track and trip and is sure to enjoy sharp improvement from his first-up run in the Hobartville a couple of weeks ago. Another progeny of Dundeel, Castelvecchio stamped himself as a horse to follow when he stormed home to win the Inglis Millennium last autumn and has only continued to improve with racing and as the bar has been raised. If not for a genuine world class star, he would have won the Cox Plate in the spring and that is the kind of form I want to be following into a race for three-year-olds.
RANDWICK GUINEAS – 3RD
No. 5 Shadow Hero – Bet Now: $6.00
Mark Newnham is absolutely flying, and Shadow Hero could be the best horse currently at his disposal. The Pierro gelding enjoyed a meteoric rise to prominence in 2019, culminating in a maiden Group 1 win in the Spring Champion Stakes. He hit the line well when fifth in the Hobartville first-up and is another horse that will relish getting out to a mile on Saturday. There’s absolutely no doubt that he is up to winning the Randwick Guineas, but I think that he’ll take further improvement from this run and will give a race like the Rosehill Guineas a serious shake in a fortnight.
RANDWICK GUINEAS – 4TH
No. 3 Microphone – Bet Now: $9.00
It completes a pretty obvious Randwick Guineas first four, but Microphone is an outstanding racehorse and even out to the mile for the first time, I can’t find a reason why he won’t be in the finish again. The Exceed And Excel colt was a star during his two-year-old campaign, failing to finish worse than second in six starts and winning the Group 1 Sires’. His first-up win in the Autumn Stakes this time could hardly have been more impressive and he’ll be ready to peak third-up on Saturday.
