Virat Kohli’s fresh and much vaunted Indian side begins their World Cup campaign against a jittery South African side, which is 0-2 already and desperate to keep their Semi Final hopes alive.
The venue, the Rose Bowl (Southampton) is a batsman’s paradise. A few weeks ago Pakistan and England scored a collective 734 runs there, including 47 fours and 22 sixes – 320 in boundaries alone. Haunting ghosts of World Cups past could certainly come back into the Proteas’ dressing room if Kohli, Dhawan, Sharma, the in-form K.L.Rahul and the ‘Yoda’ of Indian cricket, M.S. Dhoni start to get motoring.
India may be tempted to play two spinners against the Proteas (Yuzvendrah Chahal & Kuldeep Yadav – or ‘Kul-cha’), but Kohli also has the world’s leading ODI bowler, seam sensation Jasprit Bumrah to let loose on them.
The Proteas’ brightest batting stars, the silky Quinton de Kock and skipper Faf du Plessis will need to shoulder much of the heavy lifting to post a competitive score – they will do well to bottle some of whatever Pakistan had ‘brewing’ against the Poms – but in the end The Wolf fears they might be bringing rusty knives to a gunfight, with India packing too much heat to let this one slip past them.
