St. George Illawarra Dragons vs Gold Coast Titans Preview

Ten days after the 2023 NRL premiership’s kick-off, St George Illawarra finally take the first steps to putting a summer of discontent behind them.

Off-field atrocities, awful pre-season form and constant heat on coach Anthony Griffin have plagued the Dragons, however the Saints’ first line-up contains few surprises.

Jack Bird starts at lock with Jack de Belin sidelined, Tyrell Sloan and Jayden Sullivan get first crack in the No.1 and 6 jerseys, respectively.

Moses Mbye gets the nod at hooker with Jacob Liddle on the bench and Ben Murdoch-Masila is set for a club debut in the second-row.

Gold Coast slipped under the Round 1 radar to snare a valuable 22-10 win over the Tigers at Leichhardt, defying their terrible road form in the slippery slope that was their 2022 season.

Kieran Foran made an immediate impact – to the team overall and to enigmatic game-breaker David Fifita – and he’s been named but has to be in doubt after leaving the field with a knee injury.

Toby Sexton would be the likely replacement, though Jayden Campbell could be promoted off the bench.

The Titans’ spirited line-up is otherwise unchanged, Phillip Sami scored a first-half double and AJ Brimson sprinted away for a brilliant match-sealer to remind everyone of the effervescent talent Justin Holbrook has at his disposal, Tino Fa’asuamaleaui led the engine-room effort superbly.

The Titans have won three of their last four against the Dragons, including a Jayden Campbell-inspired 20-16 golden-point success in Magic Round last year, however the Saints responded with a 46-26 win in Wollongong in Round 23, running in nine tries.

This is a tough spot for the Dragons, forced to cool their heels with the Round 1 bye on the back of a disastrous Charity Shield showing on and off the paddock. Foran’s availability could swing this in the hosts’ favour, but either way I believe the Titans – with a better pack – are superior value.
