There’s plenty at stake this week for the Saints as they face another do-or-die clash against Hawthorn.
St Kilda kept its season alive last week with a 28-point win over West Coast in Perth, one that featured a five-goal bag from Dan Butler and a monster 40-disposal game from Jack Steele.
The Saints can take confidence into Saturday’s game knowing they’ve won four straight over the Hawks, but like the market suggests, a win against Hawthorn is far from a guarantee.
Sam Mitchell’s young side has now won three straight after belting North Melbourne last week in Tassie, largely thanks to a big game from key forward Jack Gunston.
Scoring goals against the Saints has come easy for most teams this season, and although St Kilda ran out comfortable 69-point winners over Hawthorn back in Round 4, this still has a sense of danger to it.
The biggest problem for Brett Ratten has been finding a reliable goal-scorer each week.
Max King was firmly in the Coleman Medal race at one point, but as we saw last week, he’s still prone to a cold game here and there.
On the flip side, the Hawks have a number of ways they can hurt you, but at the same time, it’s hard to read too much into three wins over the likes of Adelaide, West Coast, and North.
From a betting perspective, this isn’t a game that inspires much confidence, but based on the fact neither side seems capable of playing a full four quarters, it wouldn’t be surprising if the scoreboard gets a good workout.
It just so happens that the last three encounters between the Saints and Hawks have all gone Over the Total, so that looks the safest play.
