Sydney Roosters vs New Zealand Warriors Preview

All eyes are on Sydney Roosters to see how they respond to being the fall guys in the Dolphins’ debut fairytale.

After starting solidly enough, the Roosters were battered and bustled in a 28-18 loss as an 18-point favourite.

Exposed up the middle in the first half and on both edges after the break, the Roosters were forced into playing catch-up but couldn’t get their attack together.

Joey Manu is a big in this week but Matt Lodge is out, Victor Radley and Brandon Smith are both under a cloud and JWH remains sidelined.

The Warriors’ 20-12 defeat of Newcastle in Wellington in Andrew Webster’s first match as coach was far from perfect but highly impressive, particularly from the perspective of defensive commitment and composure.

Recruits Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad, Mitch Barnett, Jackson Ford, Brayden Wiliame and Dylan Walker were all superb, while Wayde Egan was a dynamic leader from dummy-half and Tohu Harris’ 80-minute effort was inspirational.

Great signs from what appears a tight-knit group under a new regime.

The Roosters are on a five-match winning streak against the Warriors that dates back to 2018.

The Warriors were plucky in last season’s 22-14 defeat at the SCG, hamstrung by some questionable calls. The Warriors scored more than 14 points against the Tricolours just once in their last eight clashes.

Forget everything you knew about the Nathan Brown-era Warriors. Webster has a limited squad at his disposal but a tenacious one that will invariably perform above the sum of its parts.

The Roosters will surely be better than last Sunday, but that’s not enough to justify by far the biggest line of Round 2.
