Are the Sydney Roosters back? They did it easy to thrash the Titans 44-16 in Mackay in Round 9. We’re going to learn a lot about the Roosters this week as they take on a Parramatta Eels side that just beat the defending premiers in Penrith.

Sam Verrills is out with another injury but Connor Watson is back to take his place. Lindsay Collins has been suspended and replaced by Sio Siua Taukeiaho. Unsurprisingly, Brad Arthur has named the same 17 Eels that beat the Panthers last week.

The Roosters needed to lift and did so just in time for a blockbuster matchup with the Eels. Brad Arthur’s side are in a tier of their own in the NRL. They’re below the Panthers and Storm, but above the rest of the competition in chasing them. It’s a spot many expected the Roosters to fill this season if not up there with the premiership favourites. Slow to start the year, the Roosters got back to their best in Round 9 by getting up the field through the middle and hitting short sides in attack. Sam Walker and Luke Keary are both excellent at attacking retreating lines and they were able to do that down the edges against the Titans last week. If there is one major area for concern for the Eels, it’s their edge defence. They’ve struggled with injuries all year and haven’t been able to consistently close up that area of the field. Dominant in the middle themselves while Mitchell Moses and Dylan Brown play career-best football, the Eels are deserving favourites. However, their weakness aligns with the Roosters’ greatest strength and could keep this one closer than many expect.
