This mightn’t be the most exciting game on paper, but it could be the most important one.
Back-to-back losses has the Swans in danger of slipping outside the eight, while there’s still life left in Essendon on the back of last week’s come-from-behind win over the Hawks.
Sydney head coach John Longmire will have spent most of the week’s training sessions addressing one important issue: goal kicking.
The Swans kicked eight goals and 13 behinds against Gold Coast, while their work around the clearances also lacked the usual polish.
As for the Bombers, it’s hard to read too much into one good quarter against a young Hawthorn outfit.
Peter Wright’s heroics were enormous, but a talented team like the Swans will punish another first half marred by turnovers and missed opportunities.
Looking back, it is fair to say that this game might be close, though.
The last five games between Sydney and Essendon have been decided by 10 points or less, and with both teams a little out of form, a similar scoreline wouldn’t surprise.
