Sydney Thunder vs Hobart Hurricanes Preview

The BBL|10 playoffs race heats up as Sydney Thunder and Hobart Hurricanes lock horns in Canberra on Monday night. Five spots on the ladder separate the teams, but the seventh-placed Hurricanes are just four points adrift of the second-placed Thunder.

The Thunder, who bounced the Hurricanes out of last season’s BBL playoffs, carved out a 39-run victory when the teams met in Perth 11 days ago.

Usman Khawaja (49 off 33), Alex Ross (44* off 34) and Ben Cutting (31* off 14) led the Thunder to 5/167. No Hurricanes batsman managed more than 30 as they limped to 8/128 from their 20 overs. Nathan McAndrew (2/25) claimed man-of-the-match honours, while Chris Green and Tanveer Sangha also took two wickets.

Thunder and Hurricanes both hit rut

Neither team has managed a win since that clash.

The Thunder went down to the Scorchers (17 runs) and Sixers (5 wickets). Brendan Doggett took 4/22 and Sam Billings shone with 83 off 48, but the Thunder still fell well short of the target of 186 set by the Scorchers.

The weather conspired against them in the Sydney derby after half-centuries from Alex Hales and Daniel Sams had lifted the Thunder to 6/166. The Thunder bowlers were all punished by the Sixers, who reached a revised target of 129 off 14 overs with eight balls to spare.

The Hurricanes’ losing streak stretched to three matches courtesy of a nine-wicket drubbing at the hands of the Scorchers last Tuesday.

D’Arcy Short (54 off 47) was the only exception in a dismal top-order performance as Hobart mustered just 5/139. Scott Boland (1/26) was the only Hurricanes bowler to take a wicket or go for less than seven an over.

The Thunder – 4-2 at Manuka Oval this season – are warm favourites. Both teams’ bowling attacks require drastic improvement on their respective last outings, but the Thunder’s posse of in-form batsmen gives them the edge here.
