Boston and Toronto seemed a wonderfully even match-up after both teams’ authoritative first-round performances. The Celtics powered past the 76ers 4–0, while the Raptors swept the Nets.
The Raptors started the opening two games of the semifinals series as NBA odds favourites, but it’s the Celtics that find themselves in a commanding 2–0 position.
The defending champs were left loitering in the starting blocks in game 1 as Boston raced to a 16–point lead at the end of the first quarter, setting up a 112–94 cruise. Jayson Tatum (21 points, nine rebounds), Kemba Walker (18 points, 10 assists), and Daniel Theis (13 points, 15 rebounds) were all superb for the Celtics. Marcus Smart hit five threes from nine attempts, while Walker shot four of seven from deep court.
Kyle Lowry (17 points, six rebounds, eight assists) stood out for the flat Raptors, who shot just 36.9 percent from the floor. Fred VanVleet (five for 12) and Pascal Siakam (five for 16) were the worst offenders.
Game 2 was much harder fought, but the Raptors will be ruing letting a double-digit second-half lead slip in a 102–99 loss. The Raptors had few answers for Tatum (34 points, eight rebounds, six assists), while Smart shot the lights out down the stretch.
The Raptors need this win – it’s hard to see them coming back from 3–0 down. They weren’t too far off the mark in game 2, but Tatum’s offensive dominance and the Celtics’ perimeter shooting makes for an irresistible underdog NBA bet.
