Max Holloway (20-4) vs Frankie Edgar (23-6-1)

When it’s all said and done, Max Holloway will easily go down as one of, if not the greatest Featherweight of all time. After losing to the “Notorious” Conor McGregor back in 2013, he ran through a murderers row of opponents in impressive fashion, taking down names like Jeremy Stephens, Anthony Pettis and previous Featherweight champion Jose Aldo twice. He looked nearly unstoppable, that is until last fight when stepping up to Lightweight to fight for the interim title against Dustin Poirier. Although a naturally large 145er, he may have struggled a bit at 155 as he didn’t have such a distinct size advantage like he usually does at his normal weightclass. Poirier figured out the key to beating Max and did enough to capture the interim belt.

A warhorse who has been with the company since 2007, Frankie Edgar has fought pretty much anyone and everyone at both Featherweight and Lightweight. He now finds himself getting another title shot in what is probably his last chance at regaining UFC gold. In his 14th year of MMA competition, no doubt the miles travelled and damage accumulated are starting to take their toll. Although he’s got a heart as big as Phar Lap and a never say die attitude, one has to think that he is not as durable as he once was. His chin was cracked in brutal fashion back in March of 2018, when Brian Ortega turned his lights out in the first round of their fight. He atoned for this only 6 weeks later when beating journeyman Cub Swanson by decision. He’s been off the scene since then but will no doubt be as ready as ever in his quest for another UFC championship.

Stylistically, this is a terrible match up for Edgar. Holloway holds a distinct size and reach advantage against him and Max’s pressure and volume of strikes increases as the fight goes on. Frankie would be wise not to stand and trade with Max, as I only see that ending one way. His best bet is to go back to what made him a champion and that is his wrestling. Using strikes to set up shots and work to get the fight to the ground. That is much easier said than done however, as Holloway possesses extremely underrated takedown defence. I think the fight will start off fairly even but Holloway should take control as the fight wears on. He is a master of pouring on the pressure and moving in for the kill when he smells blood. The Wolf is tipping a KO stoppage in the later rounds for the “Blessed” one.

Bet: Max Holloway to win by KO ($2.00)
