The WA Oaks is often forgotten until the very last minute for a lot of us on the East Coast but with racing now being one of the only sports still standing, I’m pleased to report that it found its way onto my desk a couple of days early.
It’s less than surprising to see a Grant & Alana Williams-trained, William Pike ridden and Bob Peters owned horse set to start a clear favourite in a Perth feature race and the WA Oaks really does look like being Tuscan Queen’s to lose.
WA Oaks – Winner
No. 1 Tuscan Queen – Bet Now: $1.45
It’s fair to say that there is no value left for Tuscan Queen at $1.45, but I simply cannot find anything to beat her and something would need to go seriously wrong for her not to find her way into the WA Oaks winner’s stall. The Fastnet Rock filly has continued to improve with each effort since resuming; running fourth behind Superstorm in the Listed Challenge Stakes first-up and she was last seen winning the Listed Natasha Stakes over 2200m by nearly three lengths.
WA Oaks – 2nd
No. 6 Mood Goddess – Bet Now: $13.00
Mood Goodess finished third in the Natasha Stakes and looks as though she’ll relish the small rise in trip in the WA Oaks. The Playing God filly has been a strong and reasonably consistent performer this time; winning over 1230m when fresh and placing on two other occasions. She looks to be at peak fitness for this and could very well enjoy the run of the race from barrier 2. I can’t find a reason why she won’t be in the finish and could prove to be the value of the WA Oaks field at her double-figure price.
WA Oaks – 3rd
No. 5 Cambist – Bet Now: $9.00
Cambist has returned some pleasing efforts this time and looks up to a first four finish in the WA Oaks 2020. The Gingerbread Man filly finished second at each of her first two starts back from a spell, including he Listed 1000 Guineas and was last seen finishing fourth in the Natasha Stakes. Fitter fourth-up and the rise in trip, everything suggests she’ll be there abouts again.
WA Oaks – 4th
No. 2 Pambella – Bet Now: $9.00
Neville Parnham has saddled some outstanding horses throughout his career and Pambella looks to have the makings of another black type winner. The three-year-old daughter of Playing God was good last time in, but she appears to have returned to the track a far more furnished racehorse this time and placed fifth at her first two starts, before running second to Tuscan Queen in the Natasha Stakes. Any improvement would surely see her into the finish again.
