Western Bulldogs vs Carlton Blues Preview

The hype for this Thursday’s clash between the Dogs and Blues is palpable.

Carlton has opened the season with a win for the first time since 2012 after taking down Richmond last week, while the Bulldogs are looking to bounce back after suffering a second straight defeat to Melbourne.

The belief around Princes Park is starting to grow, but new head coach Michael Voss won’t be getting ahead of himself just yet.

Carlton’s pressure inside 50 and the way they dominated the fourth quarter against the Tigers was encouraging, but there were a few concerns early on in regard to skill, and the way the back line covered Richmond’s tall forwards.

After another disastrous fourth quarter against Melbourne, the Bulldogs will be hungry to get a win on the board against a club they’ve typically held the wood over for the last decade.

Luke Beveridge’s men have won eight of their last 10 games against the Blues, and if they can land a few punches early in this contest – much like Richmond did last week – they might just turn this into a statement.

That said, the Dogs will have to go about their business without Marcus Bontempelli, who is in doubt to play due to an ankle injury.

Beveridge has enough depth in his side to fall back on, but the loss of his skipper certainly evens things up, and might even give the Blues an edge through the midfield after Patrick Cripps and new recruit Adam Cerra dominated last week.

Carlton has covered in four of its last five games against the Bulldogs as the away underdog, and if they can match the Doggies’ pressure, they look a good bet to add to that trend.
