Western Bulldogs vs Essendon Bombers Preview

Every game can lay claim for “most exciting” this weekend, but it’s always a little more special whenever the Bombers are involved.

Having not won a final since 2004, the Bombers are on course to erase a decade-plus of misery against the out-of-form Bulldogs on Sunday afternoon in Tassie.

After results went their way, the Bombers booked their finals spot with a convincing 38-point win over Collingwood, but they’ll need a repeat performance if they wish to knock off a Dogs team that was a very recent flag favourite.

Luke Beveridge’s side has been on a downward spiral since Josh Bruce’s season was brought to an abrupt end a few weeks ago – a loss that has not surprisingly made goals hard to come by.

To make matters worse, the Dogs squandered a top-four finish last week after Bailey Smith’s last-second kick from outside 50 was rushed through for a behind, sinking them to their third straight loss.

Now, the Dogs gear up for a rejuvenated and boastful Bombers outfit that proved too much for the Bulldogs only three weeks ago at Marvel.

Peter Wright proved the difference with a huge seven-goal bag, while the writing was on the wall for the Dogs as they faded in the second half.

With all that in mind, this is still the toughest game of the weekend to try and pick.

Barring the last month, the Dogs have looked untouchable at times on attack, while the Bombers’ track record in finals speaks for itself.

That was then and this is now though, and there really is no denying how fiery the Dons have looked in recent weeks.

Unlike in years past, this is a club that clearly wants to play for Ben Rutten, and after downing Hawthorn in Tassie only two months ago, the Bombers look a very nice bet to cap off what might be a big weekend for the underdogs.
